- 8x8-inch baking dish or cast iron skillet 
- Medium-sized mixing bowls 
- Pastry cutter or hands for cutting butter 
- Peeler and knife for apples 
- Wooden spoon or spatula for mixing 
- Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/3 cup chopped pecans
- 1/4 cup brown sugar for topping
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon for topping
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg for topping
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
- Optional: vanilla ice cream caramel sauce, whipped cream
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). 
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into even pieces. 
- In a bowl, mix the apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Spread the mixture into the baking dish. 
- In another bowl, combine oats, chopped pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the topping. 
- Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or hands until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. 
- Sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture. 
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. 
- Let cool slightly before serving with ice cream, whipped cream, or extra caramel sauce.
