Ingredients
  

  • 2 slices of sourdough or rustic bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter softened
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sugar optional, for faster caramelization
  • ½ apple Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, thinly sliced
  • 2 –3 slices sharp cheddar or Gruyère cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, season with a pinch of salt, and cook slowly until caramelized (about 15–20 minutes). Stir occasionally. Add sugar if desired.
  • Slice the apple thinly and set aside.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice.
  • Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet.
  • Layer with cheese, caramelized onions, and apple slices.
  • Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
  • Cook on medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  • Slice and serve warm.
