- 2 slices of sourdough or rustic bread
- 1 tablespoon butter softened
- 1 small onion thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon sugar optional, for faster caramelization
- ½ apple Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, thinly sliced
- 2 –3 slices sharp cheddar or Gruyère cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, season with a pinch of salt, and cook slowly until caramelized (about 15–20 minutes). Stir occasionally. Add sugar if desired.
Slice the apple thinly and set aside.
Butter one side of each bread slice.
Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet.
Layer with cheese, caramelized onions, and apple slices.
Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
Cook on medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side.
