- 1 small onion finely chopped
- 4 garlic cloves minced
- 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes or fresh equivalent
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sugar optional, to balance acidity
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes optional
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent.
Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Pour in crushed tomatoes and stir well.
Season with salt, pepper, oregano, basil, and sugar (if using).
Lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If a smoother texture is desired, blend the sauce using a hand blender.
Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
