Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions
 

  • Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk milk and egg together.
  • Gradually mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients to form a smooth batter.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  • Drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil.
  • Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Serve warm with dipping sauce.
